1996-1999 Chrysler Neon Car Review

Overall Rating 3 Stars
Description
The Chrysler Neon is a smaller American car that is a competitor to European and Japanese saloons. The Neon is lively to drive and comes with a lot extras but it has struggled to raise eyebrows outside the United States.

Chrysler Neon (1996-99)
Road Test
The Chrysler Neon offers little new to the market place, comparing the interior space to other family saloons in the market place including the Ford Mondeo, Peugeot 406 and Volkswagen Passat the Chrysler Neon is not great but if you compare the price it is a sensible cheap purchase.

The Chrysler Neon is a reliable car with an interior that although small is still airy. If you are a passenger sitting in the rear, the leg room is quite small. The styling is also a little bit cheap.

When it comes to equipment the Chrysler Neon has lots of it, this includes important safety extras like twin airbags and ABS breaking in all versions except the LE.

The most popular Chrysler Neon engine size is the 2.0 litre, its lively as a manual but the three-speed auto transmission is a bit lazy which makes it less pleasurable to drive and makes it more expensive to run.

The handling on the Chrysler Neon is precise and consistent but compared to other vehicles in it's class the noise level is higher and the ride is not as smooth.
Positive Points
  • Low used prices now
  • Willing engines give brisk performance
  • Lots of equipment on top versions
Negative Points
  • Ride quality is bettered by many rivals
  • Cabin looks and feels a bit tacky
  • Thirsty old-school three-speed auto
